This 'N That Thursday: Canines as a Sapien Food Source

No gallines or melagrines (turkeys) were harmed in the writing of this post

Welcome to This 'N That Thursday!

It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…

I have heard that certain cultures feed on canine meat. Usually this information comes from word of mouth. First from my sapiens hearing it around, and then it reaches my ears. My initial reaction was definitely disgust when I first heard about it. How could sapiens want to eat something like me? Aren't we considered sapien's best friend? Even though that saying seems to be of American origin, we take it for granted that it should also be a view shared around the world. However, it seems other cultures might not agree.

Sapiens eat various kinds of animals. Be it a bovine, porcine, canine, or even feline, it seems that many sapiens will eat anything with a heartbeat. As a meat-eater myself, I eat plenty of gallines (chickens), bovines, and more. Who am I to say canines should not be eaten? In other areas, we are not just pets! It could be analogous to the sapiens who raise their own gallines or porcines at home as pets, but then end up eating them at the fast food joint down the street!

In many Asian countries, canines are farmed as a food source. According to the Guardian, demand has increased dramatically because the meat is revered as a food that increases virility, cures lactation issues, and remedies all sorts of other ailments. With this spike in demand comes a spike in price, and vagrants are stealing canine pets from sapiens and trading them on the black market.

There are many reasons to hate this practice of eating canines. Hearing things like this just make me want to crawl into a corner and whimper.
"Some diners believe the more an animal suffers before it dies, the tastier its meat, which may explain the brutal way dogs are killed in Vietnam – usually by being bludgeoned to death with a heavy metal pipe..."
But then again, we've heard horror stories in the United States--about how gallines are condemned to tiny cages to produce eggs, how foie gras is made, and many more atrocities that still continue. Is it any less brutal? Is it any more accepting?

What do you think? Have you tried canine meat? Let me know!

  1. Hmmm... Lots of food for thought (no pun intended...really). The idea of killing any living being to feed another living being is challenging for me to grapple with. But I'm a meat eater, my body does really well on meat protein. I tend to choose which meats not to eat - I don't eat lamb, duck, buffalo and certainly wouldn't eat dog! It's not something that makes sense in my own head and I've thought about it a lot without many answers as far as what I really stand for... I try to understand different cultures as well but feel it's absolutely wrong to kill dogs for food and hate the killing of elephants and dolphins. Ay, it's too much for my brain!

  2. This is so sad! I know all cultures are different and have their own practices, but killing an animal so brutally? I'm sure people with cows can say this about cows and we still eat cow meat here in the states, but I could never eat a dog!

    1. That's true. It seems like we are contradicting ourselves when we eat cows ...I know I'm a meat lover and it flusters me the same time!

  4. I couldn't eat dog. I get it, on some level. I mean, I'm Cajun. I've eaten plenty of things other people won't touch. But not dog or cat. And I'm one of those people who raises chickens as pets, but still eat chicken.

    1. That's true. It's hard to judge especially when it comes to tradition and cultures however when it hits so close to home....it just becomes more of a struggle.

  5. I have heard about other cultures eating dog and cat... I even remember watching a documentary about it once. But my heart doesn't want to accept it as a reality. The worst part is feeling like there's nothing we can do to stop it.
I've even heard about something much worse than bludgeoning the animals - I've heard of them being skinned alive. I cannot fathom this extreme brutality. I don't want to believe that human beings are capable of such evil - but we know that they are. I do respect other cultures, but I don't have to respect every practice.
Heavy stuff today, Ruckus... but thanks for posting it. Maybe with more awareness, the world will speak up and we can start pressuring these countries to stop these atrocities.

    1. Hi Pam, thanks for throwing in your 2cents. It's hard to hear about this extreme practice especially when sapiens hold dogs so dearly to their hearts.

  7. It is sad. Even I can bear such fact... this coming from a person who lives in an Asian country where there are still provinces that have people who eat dogs. Fortunately for us, here in the city, dog meat trading is banned and fined.

I think it's a lot more worse in China and Vietnam because they do not see dogs as pets, but rather as commodities. It's not that they are innately evil. It's part of their culture and belief. It's even more disturbing how one of China's provinces cook dog meat as a delicacy and they have a festival for it held once a year.

If I had my own way, I would stop dog meat trading and eating.
