My sapiens will let me have leftover canned pumpkin! |
Welcome to the Halloween special edition of This 'N That Thursday! I'm leading off with a special pumpkin roll (shaped like mini pumpkins!) baked by my sapiens.
It’s a little of this and a little of that and everything in between…
Read on for more details!
These cranberry-pumpkin rolls were crafted following King Arthur's recipe and with Dessert By Candy's instructions. My sapien decided to add a little twist by using both Brazil nuts, walnuts, and pecans as stem starters. To take it up another level, they drizzled melted semi-sweet chocolate to complete the stem look. One tip from my sapien: make sure you watch the internal temperature of the roll. It can shoot up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit quite quickly before the estimated 20-25 minute cook time. I think it looks delicious, but unfortunately would have gastrointestinal issues with the chocolate!
In addition, with Breaking Bad's finale, my sapiens decided to cook up a batch of Walter White's Blue Sky (don't worry, it's only sugar!) One of my sapien's is going as Mr. White for Halloween, so a batch of this sugary treat was necessary to complete the costume! This recipe comes from Sugarhero, and is very fun to make from start to finish. Tips from the comments in the blog to keep in mind: Use a candy thermometer as temperature is key and gradually add the corn syrup as you are heating up the sugar and water mixture to get a more transparent product.
Yet another yummy item that I can't have! |
To digress from baking, Halloween is upon us, and I would like to address an article that MarketWatch recently posted: "America spends $300 million on costumes for pets". That is a fantastic number! In estimation, it is over $1 million for every sapien that lives in the USA (316 million!).
"Yes, Halloween has gone to the dogs. And the cats, too. Sales of pet costumes have soared in recent years, growing by 68% — from $220 million in 2010 to $370 in 2012, according to the National Retail Federation"
That is a lot of money and yet a tiny droplet in the $61 billion spent on pets annually as mentioned in last week's TNT post. As I mentioned in that post, sapiens like to treat their canines like children, and to that effect, I do not think it is a big deal for this money to be spent. It is mainly for the sapien's enjoyment, so please do not judge too harshly on how they want to spend their money! We canines may feel a little uncomfortable with the extra layer of fabric, but for the most part, we enjoy the happy look on our sapien's faces during these special occasions.
My sapiens have decided to take a more frugal approach for my costume this year. Can you tell what I am going as this year (hint: that's not ketchup on the floor!).

Wow the pumpkins certainly look yummy. Between the rolls and the candy, your people are very talented. I am impressed!
ReplyDeleteThe brown dawgs really won't wear clothing (other than their hunting vests), so the dollar store is our friend when it comes to costume buying. :)
Have a Happy and Safe Halloween. We are supposed to have rain and thunderstorms here so I doubt we will see many kids.
Those pumpkins looks too good to eat!! So cute.
