PSA: This 'N That Thursday - Limiting where Canines Can Roam in San Francisco

I am pleased to announce that I am co-hosting a blog hop with not ONE, but TWO canines! Two browns make a white?! Thank you to 2 Brown Dawgs for the original theme. Today is "...a little of this and a little of that and everything between..."

Grab the badge and join the hop.  All are welcome! Happy This N' That Thursday (TNT), everybody!

Here's my addition to this week's hop:

There has been recent news of a debate between sapiens in San Francisco, California. Should dogs be allowed to roam one of the most welcoming beaches for off-leash canines in the National Park Service?

Save me, San Francisco!
Proponents of limiting canines access to these parks are petitioning because of the effect that canines have on the wildlife. Opponents just want their canines to be free as they always have been. The proposal lists 22 areas which were previously available for canine enjoyment. Only seven would be designated as off-leash. The remaining areas would be either outright-banned for canines or allowed on-leash.

In the article posted on September 24, 2013, it seems the residents still have time to voice their concerns over the measure:
"There is now a 90-day public comment period for dog owners and others to make their displeasure known. Then a final plan will be unveiled, probably in early 2015."
I hope we can all work together to come up with a fair solution. If we have to limit some areas, so be it, but as limited as canine freedom is, don't take most of it away!

It will be an even gloomier day if I get banned from places like Ocean Beach

Now this all makes little sense in current times what with the Federal Government shut down. The decision may even be delayed further as this issue continues. The Ruckus for Mayor campaign lives on!

  1. That's too bad they are thinking of limiting access - I hope they are reasonable about it. Here in LA we have VERY restricted beaches - there are only a few that allow dogs. It's better south in San Diego and north in SF.

  2. Thanks so much for hosting TNT with us. Happy to have you.

It is too bad they cannot find a way to make it work for everyone. Maybe seasonal limits if it is to protect breeding. They tried to limit access of snowmobilers, hunters and hikers to some National Park areas here in Michigan. Many of us wrote comments during the comment time to tell them how important it is for people to be able to access these areas and they did not go through with it.

    1. Wow nice to hear that your comments made a difference. I would imagine that most of the time they would just brush that off.

  3. Hi Y'all!

Oh dear, oh dear...there are so few places for us to go anywhere with our humans that it seems unfair. If we endanger wild life then what about the humans? Their behavior is usually much worse than ours, especially human children. What wildlife are endangered? If it's turtles just close the beach for their breeding period.

I live in a wildlife preserve. I walk on the beach all the time. I've learned not to chase the wading birds. The ducks and geese usually just ignore me. I swim and retrieve and they sit and watch. We also have an abundance of turtles...big water turtles.

If humans don't train us to behave their human children are going to do greater damage to wildlife areas. It's always the irresponsible humans who spoil it for us pawed ones!

    Y'all come by now!

    1. I completely agree with you Hawk! It just takes one to ruin it for everyone and that seems to be the case here. No apologies needed! I love to hear your thoughts about this matter.

  4. That's a tough one. We live in the rural mid-west and don't get to many public places. But then, my dogs can run whenever they want or when when I am outside with them. We don't have sapiens restricting the freedom, just varmints.

    1. That's true huh? I never imagine how it would be living int he mid-west. Here in CA we are pretty restricted and it seems like they are moving the boundaries closer.

  5. There just aren't enough places for our furry friends to roam to begin with! I hope the people in San Fran make their wishes known.

    1. Me too Jodi! I'm not sure what to make out of it because in SF, the open area is already pretty small. It's going to make it hard to get a decent exercise in.

  6. That gloomy photo is gorgeous!

One of my biggest beefs about living in Central Florida was that there was no place to take my dogs. Not the parks, not the beaches ... it was horrid. I hope you're allowed all kinds of freedom for a long time to come.

    1. Is it that restrictive in Florida? I would imagine there would be more freedom given so many beaches are out there. How did you end up getting your exercise in then?

  7. Happy TNT Ruckus, and congrats on your new co-hosting duties! I hope you don't lose your freedoms in SF, we don't live close to the coast here in the East, but when we visit, I notice dog times on beaches are pretty limited at most of them. I hate to see freedoms taken away, when it should be going in the other direction! Will the federal shutdown actually help, by slowing things down so changes may not happen as soon?

    1. Thanks Jan! I'm pretty excited myself. I understand where you are coming from. It is going in the reverse direction and that is frustrating!

  8. Congrats on hosting TNT!
We live in a city that isn't dog UN-friendly, but it's not particularly dog-friendly either. It tries to be, but it just isn't trying hard enough! :) There are a lot of places where we're not allowed to go. We are right smack in the middle of America, so no ocean beaches to be banned from. There are quite a few lakes in the surrounding areas, but I have to admit that I have no idea if dogs are banned from any of those or not. I don't *think* so, but not certain.
I hope the proposal doesn't pass and you'll be able to enjoy all the freedom that you always have!

P.S. That gloomy beach photo is just amazing! Love it.

    1. Thanks Pam. I'm so happy to team up with 2 Brown Dawgs for this blog hop. Do you take your pups out to the lake? I would say..if there are no signs..then it's free reign!

  9. Oh dear, we live in Jersey City just outside NYC and I have to say that both cities go back and forth with dog friendly and non. There are parks but many dont allow dogs in certain sections. There are tons of boutiques and dog parks though. I really hope that San Francisco is friendly to their canines and that this doesnt pass

    1. SF has always been pretty much dog-friendly but this is actually making me nervous that it might actually end up going the other way!
