Quack Quack "Wise Treats for Dogs"?

Review of August BarkBox 2013: Item 3 of 5
Ruckus Report: Plato Natural Duck Strips

Quack quack! Oh, do I love chasing down birds and ducks. Not only are they fun to chase around the park and pond, but they are also delicious! I do have a confession. Sometimes I love them so much that I like to lick their waste product too! *ashamed*

PROS:

Plato mentioned that as many as twenty percent of puppies have food allergies to other meats products such as chicken. This is why they carry duck treats--so they can tailor to those dogs who are hypersensitive and reactive. They also produce other products such as Salmon Strips and Organic Chicken-- both which sounds perfect for my palate! Luckily for me, I have not reacted negatively to any particular food.

In case you are interested, some symptoms of allergies in dogs like myself (which are quite similar to sapiens) include itchy runny eyes and nose, scabbed red skin, itchy ears, frequent ear infections, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, and swollen paws. Severe cases are when we present with difficulty breathing which may warrant a visit to the hospital. If you strongly believe that the allergen is food related, one must start an elimination diet with close monitoring.

Here are some of the benefits right from Plato's website:
Nutritional Benefits
  • Over 90% duck
  • Hypoallergenic, great for dogs with food allergies
  • Natural ingredients, fortified with anti oxidant vitamins, zinc, & high in iron
  • No artificial colors, flavors, synthetic preservatives, or GMO's (genetically modified organisms)
  • Naturally preserved.
  • Antioxidant vitamins E and С
  • No meat by-products or meals
  • There is a very potent duck smell which makes this a very high reward treat for me (trumps the liver treats even!). My sapiens just hold it up and I will work every trick I can think of!
Ahhh the torture!
  • The texture of this treat appears as if duck meat is compressed down to little rectangular shapes. It is very soft and tender. The treat will fall apart when being chewed but I love it so much that I will lick up every single bit of crumbs from the floor!

CONS

The direction of advertisement can be misleading. On the packaging, it notes "Wise Treats for Dogs" which makes many sapiens out there think that this could be beneficial for intelligence. However, when you read more about why that is listed, it is mostly because of allergic reactions to chicken-based products. Although this may be true, I would be cautious if your pup has a hypersensitive immune system because us dogs can have a negative reaction to anything!

DESIGN

This treat is sealed in a resealable zip lock bag, available in 6oz or 16oz. The one that came in the BarkBox was the 6oz.

  • The bag is quite colorful in it's blue shiny packaging which quickly draws my sapiens' eyes when they are deciding which treat I get for the day!
Packaging
  • The treats are rectangular in size, about 0.5cm in thickness. Perfect for small and medium size dogs like myself.

PRICE
There is no price listing on the Plato Pet Treat website for their treats.  From my research, the 6oz packaging is approximately $7 USD and the 16oz package is approximately $12 USD. That's almost three times as much for less than two times the price! My sapiens are considering the bigger package at the next purchase for the better deal.
