American Eskimo Left at Home || Free Doggy Day Care

This is what we typically do when we have to leave out of town either for a wedding or event. This time we left to Napa for the weekend and left Ruckus the Eskie, my american eskimo dog, over at our parents house. We always bring his toys so he can feel right at home. We are lucky, not many people have free doggy daycare!

How to Wash your Dog in 8 Steps: Dog Bath!

Ruckus is a 6 year old American Eskimo and we’ve had pretty good experience on dog washing since we do most of our grooming at home.

A trip to the groomers typically costs us $150-200 dollars and takes 6 hours or more, so let’s start saving you some money!

3 minute YouTube Video:

Step 1 Gather your Tools

It helps to have everything set up so that you don’t leave your wet dog in the middle of the bath washing process.

We’ve prepared the following for today’s dog washing:

Step 2 First Rinse

In CA, we are blessed with pretty warm weather all year round, so all of his baths have been in the backyard with our trusty hose. Depending on your dog breed and hardiness, you may need to bathe them indoors in your bathtub or sink.

Note that it is super important to make sure that you are able to catch all of the fur so that it doesn’t clog your pipes!

Step 3 Apply Shampoo

We love love love the shampoo and conditioner made by Viva La Spa since it makes Ruckus smell like baby powder.  See the link below for more info.

Step 4 Rinse Shampoo

Hose him down at full blast to clear away any last bit of shampoo!

Do note that we also used Viva La Spa conditioner to keep his fur silky, but edited it out keep this video condense and to the point!

Step 5 Let your Dog Run Away (optional)

Now as you know, most dogs HATE baths and Ruckus is NOT an exception to this rule. Give your pup some breaks in between sessions where it makes sense, like after a rinse and after towel drying.

Step 6 Towel Dry

Speaking of towel drying, remember to keep a few towels handy. Manually dry off as much as you can to save time with the blow dryer.

Step 7 Blow Dry and Brush

You can use any blow dryer you prefer. We understand that the costs for dog-specific blow dryers has a higher price point, so we just use a human-grade blow dryer.

Brushes on the other hand, are a different story. Our dog is an American Eskimo with a thick double coat, so we use many types of brushes to keep him handsome.

Step 8 Enjoy the Fruits of your Labor

Ah, the final step. After an hour-plus of our time, we’ve reached Step 8.

Take a glance at the outcome. Smooth silky fur with an extra oomph of fluff!
Luckily with Ruckus we only have to wash him once every few months. He naturally sheds his dirt and dander into our white carpet!

Item 1: Zoe the Zombie Squirrel

Ruckus loves to chase squirrels, so this is a great match. We’ve gotta make sure he doesn’t catch zombie rabies, though.

Delicious and crunchy. These are usually the first items that Ruckus pulls off the shelf from the pet store.

Item 3: Simply Ghoulicious

This pumpkin flavored treat is perfect for the Halloween season. A bonus perk--helping regulate his bowels!

These snacks come in interesting shapes in the form of nuts and bolts. Maybe we can make a little Frankenstein for Ruckus to munch on.

Item 5: Rest in Pieces Tombstone

It looks like the squirrel lost the battle this time. Rest in pieces, little one.

Overall, what a fun and morbid Halloween theme box. Barkbox never ceases to amaze both humans and dogs. We still can’t figure out who is looking forward to these monthly deliveries!

You may have been searching the world wide web and wonder --What is ASMR?

Autonomous sensory meridian response is an experience that is meant for a tingling or static sensation on the skin that starts at the scalp and moves down the neck and spine.

It's the new thing that's in NOW.

We figure that we will join the parade and engage in creating an ASMR video on dog food and dog eating.

Enjoy!

Products show in video:

2) Taste of the Wild Canned Salmon

You meet all kinds of people at college, but Rad Chad is something special. Fluff-filled with a giggle stick core, he is always down for a good time, bro. At a certain point though, even Chad will forget why he's laughing.

Funny little noodles are exploding out of this toy, making it perfect to tear and toss. Hidden inside is our popular spiky ball core, which is like a bonus toy when your pup rips through the noodles' exterior. We legally can't say that this toy has more nutrition than real thing, but, well… it definitely has less sodium.

Listed above, I would say Ruckus's favorite item would be the Beer Pong. The little ping pong balls sure have little squeakers in them as the scrunching cup engages in hours of fun.

How to Grow your Instagram to 60k Followers

Hi friends! Many people inquire how we are able to gain so much traction on Instagram over at @ruckustheeskie. As of now, we have over 55k followers after starting the account a few years ago.

We started Ruckus the Eskie initially because we wanted to share our adorable cutie pie with the world. We realized that we were spamming family members and friends via email and on our personal social media accounts. The next step was to just create a separate account. We left this account public and noticed that the world wide web also expressed interest in this fluff ball! We have to admit, Ruckus is too cute to just keep to ourselves.

Here are a five quick tips on how to grow your Instagram account:

1) Find a niche

  • Discover what your passion is.
    • What do you love to share?
    • What do you love to talk about?

2) High Quality Photos

  • A good quality camera is helpful, but not necessary.
    • We previously used the Canon 60D, however noticed that it was bulky for everyday use.
  • Camera phones now produce good quality photos as well. Convenient! Our current photos are directly straight off my iPhone 6s.

3) Engagement

  • This is something that I see many accounts fail to do.  We read every comment and try our best to engage as much with our followers and fans as much as possible. Talking with other instagrammers and bloggers in your niche also helps with collaboration and networking in the field.
4) Post consistently

  • Activity and consistency are key on Instagram. Followers and fans will follow an active feed. We try to post daily but we know that for many, this may not be feasible. I mean, some of us have jobs right? We sure do!
5) Flexibility

  • We notice that some accounts have strict rules and guidelines on what they will or will not post. Keep in mind that this is completely up to you and the freedom belongs to you. Over at Ruckus the Eskie, we always remember that whatever we share, it is organic and true to us. Our main goal is to provide a glimpse into the lives of Ruckus and family.
We hope this helps provide some insight on how to grow and develop your Instagram. These are tips from our personal experiences.

Please drop by and visit us over @ruckustheeskie! We love to come visit your account as well. Please tag us!

How to Teach a Dog to Balance Treat on Nose #balancingact

1. Ensure that your dog is in a familiar and comfortable setting for training (ie avoid distractions)

2. Engage your dog to make sure that his/her full attention is on you

3. Make sure to choose a desirable treat with a flat surface

4. Have your dog in a sitting position, avoid slippery grounds for sliding

5. Initially, hold the dog treat close to your dog's nose or mouth, teaching your dog to ignore the treat by firmly saying "no" when he/she tries to reach for it. Be patient, it may take many sessions to even perfect this step.

6. Once your dog is able to avoid the food around his/her nose, place gently on snout

7. Practice balancing with your dog followed with the cues "Take it" or "OK" to allow your dog to grab at the treat. Once your dog can balance the treat on his/her nose, you may slowly lengthen the time before your dog takes the treat.

8. Remember to avoid yelling and causing a stressful environment--learn when to end the training session when you sense your dog is distressed

9. Give lots of praises. treats, and encouragement throughout the training process

10. Have fun and use the training session as a bonding experience with you and your pet!

This is how we train Ruckus the treat balancing act. He is an avid learner and very treat driven, so after a few sessions, he was able to ace it. Remember that each dog has their own learning curve!

TIP: It is extremely helpful to first teach your dog how to leave and take treats off their paws. Then the next step would be off the nose!

Here's the YouTube video of some of Ruckus's tricks.
